_Regardless when you purchase
level iv body armor or level ii, All body armor should be stored flat. Laying
it flat when not in use helps to ensure there are no sets or wrinkles in the
ballistic materials which may cause damage to the fibers. Tactical armor that
has a hard plate in the front or rear should be stored with the plate/s
removed. It should never be stored while it is damp from washing or
perspiration as this can cause mold to grow.
When caring for hard armor, it is important to remember that hard body armor, particularly ceramic material, must be handled carefully because it is fragile. Ceramic materials--such as boron carbide, aluminum oxide, or silicon carbide--are extremely brittle. Such armor should not be dropped on hard surfaces and when used, the ceramic must serve as the striking (exterior) surface. It should also be inspected before each use to ensure that no surface cracks are present that would degrade ballistic performance. Body armor fabric should never be dried outdoors, even in the shade, as ultraviolet light is known to cause degradation of certain types of ballistic fabric. Tests have demonstrated that ballistic efficiency is significantly and adversely affected by exposure to sunlight for extended periods of time. After being cleaned, the ballistic package should be laid flat to dry. Each time Body armor is washed or worn it should be visually inspected for damage or excessive wear. Also ensure that the cover of the protective inserts has not been cut, which would allow moisture to penetrate the protective panel. Even if the external carrier has not been cut or otherwise damaged, the moisture barrier can still be damaged. When the outer shell carrier rubs over the protective panel cover it can wear through the cover and expose the armor to moisture penetration. Never wear body armor that is damaged in anyway. If damaged you should immediately contact the manufacturer or representative to discuss repair options. Now you know basic maintenance and guidance if ever you decide to purchase level iv body armor. |
